The AIHW is seeking experienced and emerging leaders to fulfil Statistical Team Leaders and Project Managers roles across a range of subject and project areas. These roles provide leadership in developing and implementing strategies and objectives aligned with the institute’s corporate priorities and actively contribute to business improvement and broader organisational outcomes. Some roles may be in First Nations specific areas that lead the development, analysis and reporting of information and statistics about the health and welfare of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Other roles will work on broader topic areas across the health and welfare domains that have regular touch points with First Nation stakeholders. Details of the breadth of our functions are outlined in our Corporate Plan 2026-27 and our organisation structure.

The AIHW provides authoritative evidence and meaningful insights to support policy development, service planning, allocation of resources, and monitoring of progress against national priorities, including Closing the Gap. We are committed to working in partnership with First Nations communities, organisations, and service providers to enhance the accessibility and use of our reports and data, enabling informed decision-making and supporting the self-determination of First Nations peoples.

These roles involve extensive stakeholder engagement, including working closely with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sector and other partners. Successful candidates will support the organisation, coordination, drafting and collation of information across a wide range of health and welfare topics. The ability to engage respectfully, build relationships, and bring cultural knowledge and lived experience to this work is highly valued.

As a Team Leader you will typically be responsible for the management and supervision of teams and/or projects relevant to the Unit’s work.

Under general direction you will:

  • Provide strategic advice and develop options on professional, technical, and management matters.
  • Work collaboratively with the Unit Head and other officers within the institute to provide leadership, direction, and performance management of staff, and the effective management of allocated resources.
  • Manage complex projects and activities and provide administrative and professional support.
  • Liaise and negotiate with other areas of the AIHW, other Commonwealth government agencies, state and local authorities, and business or community organisations, and represent the AIHW at meetings as appropriate to the responsibilities above.

This recruitment process will be used to establish a merit pool to fill future similar vacancies within the AIHW.
